Changes to Medicaid Coverage

Changes to Medicaid Coverage

What You Need to Know

Beginning January 1, 2027, some New Yorkers enrolled in Medicaid will be subject to new federal work requirements. Depending on their circumstances, individuals may need to demonstrate that they are working, attending school, participating in job training, and/or engaging in other qualifying activities to maintain coverage.

There are also changes to Medicaid renewals, notices and how individuals may need to respond to requests for information.

How a person enrolled in Medicaid matters. There are two primary paths:

NY State of Health
Individuals who enrolled through NY State of Health should maintain their account, make sure their contact information is current, and watch for notices and requests for information.

Department of Social Services (DSS)
Individuals who enrolled in Medicaid through their local Department of Social Services should continue to work with DSS and pay close attention to the notices they receive. Their renewal and documentation process may be different from someone enrolled through NY State of Health.

When assisting someone, do not assume the same process applies to everyone. Encourage clients to check their notices and follow the instructions provided by the agency managing their coverage.

Resources for Employees & Clients

New York State has developed the Stay Covered campaign with information and materials designed to help Medicaid enrollees, community organizations and service providers understand the changes.
